I suppose a cool trick when ensuring you are matching up URL's between the two sites for saving Google juice is to have the new sites' domain coded to the IP address in a slightly different way - therefore allowing you to open two windows of the two sites at the same time and follow through the menu structures to ensure you catch everything for Google !?

I changed the hosts entry to just the ip of my shared server and it pinged as changed.

So, the /~username/ isn't being recognized as a hosts entry

using that in the browser does point to the server correctly

It is kicking up an open_basedir error when I point to the ip with a browser.

When I ping the domain after making the hosts edit it still pings to the old ip rather than the ip address that I defined in the hosts file.

Seth, first see if you can access the URL with the ~/username

If you can't then that path may be incorrect on that server.

I am trying to use this technique and can't get it to work. The new server is a shared host with an address like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/~username/. I have followed the steps to a "T" What could be wrong?

Excellent description Jared... I suppose I am probably like many people that are well equipped to do almost anything with the computer, until getting into DNS where I usually get lost.

Since I will be needing to do this very shortly to "see and test my site before I switch DNS", this instruction is timed well. I almost want to believe this was written just for me...
